PROMISING RESULTS ON BREAST CANCER STUDY WITH HIFU
Dr. Alessandro Napoli, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of radiology at Sapienza University in Rome, presented the results of his study involving 12 patients with invasive ductal breast cancer. All patients were treated with FUS, and post-treatment, histological evaluation confirmed the absence of residual disease in the treatment area in 10 patients. Though this study is part of early stage research, Dr. Napoli is hopeful that focused ultrasound will one day be a treatment option for women with breast cancer.

What is Focused Ultrasound ?
Focused ultrasound therapy uses ultrasound waves to guide the application of focused, high-intensity ultrasound waves through the skin down to the target tissue. The high-intensity sound waves are focused on the individual targets much like using a magnifying glass to focus the sun’s rays – only the focal point becomes hot enough to destroy the unwanted or problematic tissue. The Ultrasound gives the treating physician a three-dimensional view of the tumor in the breast, etc. to be treated and provides real-time feedback about the temperature and tissue changes that occur as each tissue is ablated. It requires no incision in an outpatient setting and allowing a rapid return to family or work.
HIFU treatment for Breast Cancer with NUTAS
A total of 106 patients with biopsy-proven breast cancer underwent extracorporeal HIFU ablation. Of 22 patients received breast conservation treatment with HIFU in Beijing center, in combination with adjuvant chemotherapy, postoperative auxiliary node dissection or/and postoperative radiation therapy. The mean follow-up time for patients with breast conservation treatment in our center was 22 months (range 10–36 months). Total resorption of ablated tumor was found half of them within 1–2 years after HIFU treatment, which mainly correlated with the increase of follow-up time and tumor size. All patients are still alive in the follow-up time and all but one is disease-free. One case presented with local recurrence after 18 months in the targeted region and this patient was subsequently treated by the modified radical mastectomy.
WHAT IS HIFU
HIFU (sometimes FUS or HIFUS) is the abbreviations of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (focused Ultrasound of high intensity). It consists of focusing the energy of a beam of ultrasound of high frequency and discharge energy in a very small volume. Applying in weaves and when it reaches sufficient energy in the center takes place cellulardestruction (coagulativa necrosis) of the cells of the objective volume by elevation of temperature among 55-100ºC (thermal ablation).
